Born in the French Alps in 2009, Hoka shoes were initially designed for running down steep mountains. The trio of French adventurists and runners that founded the brand, Nico Mermoud, Jean-Luc Diard, and Christophe Aubonnet, were inspired by downhill skis when designing their first shoes. Hoka shoes were the first of their kind, wide shoes with a thick cushy midsole and a sweet spot that made them perfect for running down mountains. Eventually, the brand expanded their offering to include all types of running shoes. However, today’s Hoka shoes continue to be characterized by the same thick cushy midsole that initially contributed to their success.
